Before university teaching became the centre of her professional career, Sylvester worked in radio and print journalism, producing programmes, reporting and editing. That early experience developed a lasting interest in language, representation and the way societies tell their own stories.

Research on Nigerian women writers developed into broader scholarship in African literature, gender and representation, culture, identity and the social contexts surrounding literary production. Creative writing has developed alongside that scholarship through fiction, poetry, drama and children’s literature.

At the University of Abuja, teaching and research are joined by conference participation, literary organisations, workshops and mentorship within the wider writing community.
